There are two sets of files: the last 30 days of data, as well as historical yearly data files for 2007 – 2011.

The actual locations have been slightly moved in order to de-identify specific locations – addresses and locations are now in the block range but not at the house.

This data covers areas of the Sheriff’s jurisdiction – which is not the entire County (for example, Los Angeles Police Department – LAPD – crime data is not included). But it is still a very large set of data.

This dataset was developed by LA County Urban Research in support of a project to map the Metrolink Lines and their related Reporting Districts for the Sheriff in 2006.

This dataset is fairly complex, since it uses a linear referencing model to ensure transfer information about reporting districts from a table of cities based upon the distance down a line. That is the reason you will find segment length information.

The Sheriff provides law enforcement support across the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) Metrolink system. There are 7 Metrolink lines:

Antelope Valley

91 Freeway

Inland Empire – Orange County

Orange County

Riverside

San Bernardino

Ventura County

Where crimes are committed inside of the rail cars, specific codes are used to report these crimes. Where vandalism, burglary, etc are committed on the property where the rails pass through, reporting districts are based upon the line and the specific city where the crime occurred.

For example, the Reporting District (RD) for the crimes onboard the Orange county Line are:

6130 in Los Angeles county

6314 in Orange County

6341 in San Diego County

Reporting Districts for crimes outside the cars include:

6101 for City of Los Angeles

6133 for Vernon

6131 for Commerce

6134 for Montebello

etc.

You can view the Reporting District map for the 91 Line (Sep 29, 2006) for one of the maps.

This dataset contains Reporting Districts (RDs) for all Law Enforcement Jurisdictions in the County of Los Angeles, including Police and Sheriff. Reporting Districts form the basis of crime reporting, organizing crimes into specific areas. This file was originally created by Don Campbell at the LA County Emergency Operations Center over a number of years for the Sheriff Emergency Operations Bureau (EOB) in consultation with various agencies.

Dates:

Sheriff reporting districts are as of February 2013

LAPD reporting districts are as of January 2010

The file geodatabase is here: Reporting District (zipped)

The accuracy of the reporting districts have been updated to match LA County parcel boundaries, but exact accuracy may vary from one data type to another. I expect that City RDs from cities may not be as accurate as RDs from Sheriff and LAPD.
