This program is part of a Medicaid Demonstration Project designed to provide DHS with federal fiscal relief to preserve vital community clinic capacity, to increase access to primary, dental, and specialty care services, and to develop Community Partners for the provision of these services. The mission of the Community Partners Program is to provide medical and dental services to the medically indigent in a way that is complementary to the DHS safety net system of care as that safety net currently exists and as it evolves in the future. The guiding principles are fairness in the system, quality of care, and efficiency. Through this innovative relationship between DHS and its partners, health care coverage is provided at almost 190 privately-operated primary care sites.

This dataset provides the locations of directly operated and contracted mental health providers, and also includes inpatient hospitals providing mental health services as of November 2011. It does not include information on individual names of clinicians.

Background

The LA County Department of Mental Health provides mental health services through directly operated and contracted providers. Active directly operated and contracted mental health providers are located throughout all eight Service Planning Areas (SPAs) of Los Angeles County and employ staff able to speak a variety of languages. The mental health providers and related data include Psychiatric Inpatient and Outpatient facilities, Community Outreach, Forensic, Residential, and Specialized Foster Care facilities.

The Department of Mental Health Quality Improvement Division is dedicated to providing analytical and data support to the Mental Health Department, and supports a number of applications and data access resources for providers and the public. For other data resources from the division, see the bottom of this entry.

How the data was created

A list of current providers was extracted from the Department of Mental Health Management Information System (MHMIS) by the Department of Mental Health Quality Improvement Division. They were located using LA County’s geocoding resources. Individual addresses that did not geocode were hand located using other resources such as Google and Bing Maps.

Information associated with these provider includes, Name, Address, Phone Number, Hours of Operation, Types of Specialty Mental Health Services (SMHS), Age Groups Served, Languages, Provider Number, Non-Governmental Agency (NGA) designation, SPA Maps, and Map Locator Number.

SPA Population Demographic Profiles are also included as an easy guide to basic information, such as number of clients served, Threshold Languages spoken (American Sign language included) in the SPA, number of providers, type, and geographic distribution of mental health services within each SPA.

Last Update: January 2013

This dataset comes from the County’s Location Management System (LMS), which is a collaborative system to locations across the County. The full dataset contains over 66,000 locations, including 42,000 public (available for download below) and14,000 non-public locations (available for government entities only) with consistent attributes. Location types are broken into more than 270 unique types using three categories (cat1, cat2, cat3) that provide detailed breakdowns of the location types.

We need your help keeping this data up to date

The County has launched an ambitious program to maintain this data collaboratively. Each location in the dataset has a defined page for it – stored in the link field. If information is incorrect, out of date, or the location is wrong, you can click on the link in ArcMap (an identified point will have a hyperlink icon next to it) and you will be taken to the page in the LMS for that location. A registered user can provide comments for that location, which will be sent automatically to the location owner.

If you feel that you are the authoritative owner for one or more of the categories or points, please contact me (email below). Please read the LMS Introduction and Documentation

Information contained in the LMS Data

This dataset is the single, central repository for locations of interest to government, including basic information about those locations. So we will keep heliports in our dataset, but not dry cleaners.

Information includes: Parks, campgrounds, trails, churches, colleges and universities, public and private schools, hospitals, mental health centers, physical features like valleys from the USGS GNIS, Manufacturing Locations, sheriff and police stations, fire stations, social service locations, child welfare service locations, airports, etc.

To download an Excel table showing the full set of Categories, download: Location Categories (includes use constraints and data owners).xlsx
