ZIP Codes were updated in 2010 through the Enterprise GIS Steering Committee (done by Regional Planning and checked by ISD/RRCC). Has this intersection been updated since then? I ask because the date on this is 12/1/2008.

I think the attributes for the city boundaries may be incorrect. For example, the area which I believe is LA proper is attributed as Pasadena.

Thanks Chris – as I noted on your other post, you can use our Location Management System (http://gis.lacounty.gov/lms) to suggest changes. Each of the Points of interest has a URL link that points back to the direct URL on the LMS system where you can comment (just like this).

As you found out, the Points of Interest is the way to go for Schools. If you find errors, you can use our Location Management System (http://gis.lacounty.gov/lms) to suggest changes.

There may be a quicker way, but we pull out the LA City schools from the state list: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ds/si/ds/fspubschls.asp. Note the StatusType field – you may not want closed or pending schools depending on your research question.

The blank areas on the screenshot and in the data are for areas covered by one of the 88 cities in Los Angeles County. The data included here is for UNINCORPORATED AREAS ONLY! You have to contact one of those cities to get land use policy data for that city; or perhaps contact SCAG, the Regional MPO.

The GIS Portal, GIS Data Disclaimer for the hydrant data describes the fields and there significance. However, the “test date” field is indicative of when the hydrant was last tested. The “install date” is when the hydrant was physically installed at the street sidewalk.

The angle field is used to rotate the various hydrant symbols for display purposes.

Two questions:
1. What is the significance of the test and installation dates? I am seeing lots of entries from the years 1899 and 1970. Do those values have any meaning?
2. Is the angle attribute indicative of the hydrants position relative to the street?

I think this should be updated in the title to say ‘Unincorporated areas’ too. Because everything not in a city is in an unincorporated area. I know that it won’t have the internal boundaries for now (that’s a whole separate project); but it should have that so people still could see where the unincorporated boundaries are.

Hi there,

The footprints are an expensive dataset to create, and we have a collaborative group of governments that paid a lot of money to create them. If the data were freely available we would run into the free-rider issue, where no one would help pay for creating and maintaining them. That’s why they are under license, but will eventually go into the public domain. I will have to contact Santa Monica and ask them to pull them off that site.

I think it’s unfortunate that LA can’t share this dataset. Santa Monica GIS has the building footprints from 2008 available for free download (same source, I’m guessing). My project site is two blocks away from Santa Monica in West LA. So I’m out of luck.

You can access SPA health-related data from the Department of Public Health’s Health Assessment Unit Webpage: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/ha/index.htm. Explore the data tables (excel), Query System and reports. Also, look at Health District level data.

Hi Mark,

A question for this line data with some fields in pairs (Left and Right)–Do you think we could assume the Left field as start points, and the Right field as end points, when calculating the X,Y coordinates for Left/Right of this line data?
