GIS Day – We Did It!

Martha Selig

Now that we have realized our first coordinated County GIS Day, it would be a good idea to critique the process and result before we forget the details. Please help us make the next such event better. Take the GIS Day Critique Survey today and make sure your voice is heard.

I thank everyone who volunteered and participated in making this event such a success. I especially appreciate the latitude afforded me by Nick Franchino and Mark Greninger. Nick kept asking what else I needed and Mark kept saying, “Build it and they will come!” Nick and Mark also arranged for the GIS-equipped vehicles.

We couldn’t have done it without the funding and “What else can we bring?” attitude of Ana Maria Correa and her group. Hwa Saup Lee and Heather Bone donated invaluable graphics support. Michael Chong’s parking map was terrific. Nick Franchino and Vijay Manghirmalani were our vendor wranglers; Vijay also contacted Rio Hondo College about participating. Jeremy Bok helped me put the contest together. Lois Yoon, Richard Ledesma and Rajesh Prabhu collectively made dozens of phone calls to find out which groups would participate or submit maps.

My thanks to those who responded to earlier surveys to help shape the event. Thanks, too, to all the swell people who wrote, blogged, emailed, posted, talked up and otherwise worked to raise awareness about GIS Day.

Finally, a huge thanks to those who came early to help set up and then stayed to staff the showcases. From all I saw, you really succeeded in engaging people. I think it turned out wonderfully.

Our contest winners and the prizes they chose were:

  • Linda Perez – thumb drive
  • Michelle Encarnacion – Starbucks card
  • Jim Wilkinson – Starbucks card
  • Junior Togelang – gift basket
  • Lyn – Starbucks card
  • Hsiao-ching Chen – book of maps
  • Cesar Espinosa – Starbucks card
  • Wendell – catalog gift certificate

We donated the leftover prizes to our charitable giving campaign for its upcoming auction. Who knew our event would be educational and benefit folks in need?
