Hello everyone – this is for the ArcGIS Desktop experts out there! This question was sent to me by a Public Health Analyst.
So here’s a typical problem I run into that discourages me. It’s probably an ArcGIS problem, so no cheating by using ArcGIS 3! Douglas Morales in our Lead program is trying to select for homes built before 1978 from the assessor data. He has run into problems with selecting for those parcels. I’m giving it a hack…and so far unsuccessful. Here’s what I’m doing:
- Downloading the Parcels_SVW
- Creating a YrBuilt1 integer field, since the YearBuilt1 field is a string
- Using the field calculator to build the numeric values into the YrBuilt1 field …
That’s where I’m running into errors. I’m tempted to take the data into SAS, but then we won’t be able to spatially join the birth data to determine which kids are at risk of living in a house that may still contain lead.
Any ideas? Thanks!
Here was my response (but remember, no ArcView 3.3 )
In ArcView 3, I would sometimes run into issues where the Assessor mis-keyed certain dates so they weren’t numeric and that caused a problem.
To resolve this I would run a command to select only those records where the year was a number. In ArcView 3 this function was “isNumeric” – so I could build a query like this: select from parcels WHERE [PCL_Data].IsNumeric
