By markgreninger, on November 15th, 2011 To get the word out even further about what we are doing in LA County in terms of geography, I am connecting the content that I publish on this site out to my Facebook account, and (more importantly) enabling visitors to “Like” various posts which will link us out to the Facebook community, connecting the information we publish to more people!
So – if you have a facebook account, you can like the content you find interesting!
I should have done this before our big outreach (GIS Day), which is tomorrow, but late is better than never!
So if you are in LA tomorrow, check out GIS Day: http://gis.lacounty.gov/gisday
By markgreninger, on November 15th, 2011 As we count down the hours to GIS Day, there are a couple of unique ends I wanted to ensure that visitors were aware of.
Tours of DPW Operations
LA County Public Works will be offering tours of its Emergency Operations Center and its Traffic Management Center. Come see how DPW uses GIS to respond to emergencies and disasters, and how it uses GIS to help manage traffic in the cities it is responsible for. These are a unique, behind the scenes look at GIS in action!
GIS Enabled Vehicles
We will have at least three vehicles on site that support County operations using GIS.
- The LA County Fire Truck responds to incidents, including the Station Fire, to provide on-site mapping support. It provides critical support for decision makers during large events!
- The Sheriff is rolling out mapping into its vehicles, providing officers the ability to see backup units as well as automatically routing them to dispatches, supporting public safety.
- The Sheriff Emergency Operations Vehicle is a large trailer that supports Sheriff operations in the middle of major disasters. This vehicle should be extremely impressive and fun to check out!
By markgreninger, on November 15th, 2011 This year, the GIS Day Committee will wrap up the day with the cutting of the GIS Day cake! Sponsored by Pictometry, this will be a yummy ending to our day. So come for the maps in the map gallery, the booths, the presentations, but stay around at the end for the cutting of our GIS Day cake! It should serve at least 100 people, so bring your appetites too!
Here are a couple of pictures of the cake cutting.

By markgreninger, on November 15th, 2011 Join us at the Edison
This year the GIS Day Committee is having an apres event social. It will be on Thursday (the day after GIS Day) since many of us are going to be pretty tired after a long day of organizing.
We invited anyone to join us at the Edison, which is apparently a very cool place in Downtown LA. See you there at 5 pm!
