“GIS – the Power of Location”

What is GIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful software technologies that allow vast amounts of information to be linked to geographic locations.  Using the concept of an “electronic” or digital map, GIS records, stores, and analyzes multiple layers of spatial data and relates this data to locations of interest (e.g., communities, neighborhoods and people that live there).  These layers contain data in the form of points (e.g., addresses, locations, etc.), lines (e.g., streets, highways, etc.), polygons (e.g., areas, political jurisdictions, etc.) and images that can be viewed in various combinations to identify and display underlying spatial relationships.

When and where is the event?

Wednesday, November 14, 2012
9:00am to 3:30pm
Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Headquarters
900 S. Fremont Ave

What is GIS Day?

GIS Day is free to attend both for the public and presenters, supported by County departments and funded by the County’s enterprise GIS Program.  We invite you to join us to learn more about how the County, government agencies, private companies, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in  emergency response, social services and administration to make life better in Los Angeles County.

Events this year

Training Track

Back by popular demand, we will offer five  training sessions, including tips for improving cartography, using ArcGIS Online, and accessing County GIS resources. These sessions will be first-come first-served, so sign up quickly!

 Manager’s Track:

A special  manager’s half-day track will be held to help County managers new to GIS get up to speed with what GIS can do for their line of business. There will be a presentation on how GIS can help, an introduction to the County’s GIS viewer,  a tour of DPW’s Traffic Management and Emergency Operations center, and time to visit the booths.

GIS Day Cake

This year we will be celebrating GIS Day with a cake that will be served after GIS Day concludes at 3:30.  We would like to thank Pictometry for sponsoring the cake, and I am excited to see the design that DPW will be putting on the cake!

Who is our audience?

GIS Day is a chance for GIS staff, students, and residents from around the County to share what they are doing with GIS, make connections, and to reach out to the public and to other using GIS technologies.  We invite government  departments, cities, and agnencies, along with colleges, and private vendors to showcase their programs and capabilities to folks who want to learn more.  Our audience varies in its understanding of GIS, so we are looking to illustrate that the use and value of GIS are limited only by imagination.
