Introduction to GIS (GIS120)

Classifying data & conventions (including census 2010), geocoding addresses, displaying latitude / longitude, spatial and SQL queries, field data collection using GPS (Trimble), Digitizing & basic online interactive mapping.

GIS 221 Cartography

We cover map layout basics and examine how to create graphically pleasing and professional-looking maps using tools and settings including mapbooks and standard conventions used in various industries. Sessions also include building & posting basemaps online.  This semester, students will collectively build campus basemap for contribution to ESRI community map program.

GIS 230 GIS for Environmental Technology

CRN 70555 TTh 07:00 – 09:30pm

Working with surfaces, and interpolating field data, weighted modeling and remote sensing.  Course also includes GPS field data collection exercise using Trimble software and hardware.

 

 

 

 

Geographers median earnings are $54,000 per year

Passing this along:

Georgetown University’s Center for Education and the Workforce has released a report titled “What’s IT Worth?”.

According to the report, “Median earnings for those with Bachelor’s degrees vary greatly—from $29,000 for Counseling Psychology majors to $120,000 for Petroleum Engineering majors.”

What about a Bachelor’s degree in Geography?

  • Full-time, full-year workers with a terminal Bachelor’s degree in Geography showed median earnings of $54,000 a year.
  • Gender composition of the Geography major was 30% female and 70% male.
  • 30% of Geography majors go on to obtain a graduate degree.
