Enhanced citizen contact with government

The next level of GIS is coming:  dedicated mobile applications that provide residents the ability to request city services while they outside their home.  See this recent article from the LA Times: http://www.latimes.com/la-me-city-phone-app-20100622,0,3490399.story

The only issue I have with the applications in the article is that they are too specific to an area and a service (i.e. only one council member’s area, with only a general set of services).  What I would like to see is a generic application that covers the entire County, regardless of jurisdiction.   I am looking forward to the day (which I know is coming) that I can take a picture of an issue (pothole, broken sidewalk, graffiti, etc), click “send” and our GIS systems will use the geo-tagged location (since all pictures now are geo-tagged), along with the request type, to automatically route the information to the correct agency, who can respond and let the resident know the status of the incident until it has been resolved.

I’ll be trying to coordinate this as we move forward …
