3D Mapping article and video

Excerpted from an e-mail post:

3D mapping is fast gaining traction and I see it as being the norm within ten to fifteen years at the latest, when it is quite possible that digital maps as we know them will go the way of the Dodo Bird. The possibilities for crime analysis are many. For instance, 3D mapping essentially melds intra-building GIS with traditional two dimensional, street level GIS. What will also definitely change is address matching. It will then have to be done in 3D. For example, the address of a store could come back to a door on the second floor of a building.

  • Nice article. I agree that we are definitely moving in that direction already. In fact, we have this capability in LA County. The Department of Regional Planning did a 3D project for Marina del Rey – it’s very high resolution buildings – you can use in Google Earth or other type of 3D viewers. We were hoping to maybe do for Universal City (since they are doing a new plan for the area)…no resources to support it right now, but we’ll see.

This is where we are headed for sure…
