Free GIS Training

Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) will be hosting a couple FREE GIS Seminars here at the City of Palmdale the first week of October.   Contact Justin Patananan (661-945-6804) if you are interested

It’s open to anyone here at the City of Lancaster and the neighboring cities (Palmdale), town councils and local water districts.

 

Two courses, each one day sessions from 9AM to 4PM, will be conducted:

1)    An Introductory Course (Choice of either October 8th or October 9th), and

2)    An Intermediate Course (Choice of October 10th).

 

A general course outline can be found below.  There are 15 seats available per session, so please let me know by next Thursday, October 3rd, if you have any interest in sending any staff.

Course Outlines:

SCAG GIS I (Choice of either Tuesday 10/8 or Wednesday 10/9)

9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
This is an introduction to GIS course designed for users with little or no previous GIS experience.  It is primarily a hands-on class which introduces ArcGIS 10.2 software and walks through basic features, simple queries, and the creation of a map from start to finish.

GIS Training Topics

  1. GIS Overview
  2. Navigate through Basic Features
    Simple Queries: Attribute and Location
    Create a Vicinity Map from Start to Finish
  3. Create & Edit Data

 

SCAG GIS II (Choice of either Wednesday 10/9 or Thursday 10/10)

9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

This is an intermediate level hands-on class designed for users with some experience with ArcGIS.  It uses ArcGIS 10.2 to create spatial data, conduct data analysis, create data driven maps (map books), edit & develop metadata.

 

GIS Training Topics

  1. Geocoding (X,Y-coordinated data, Address match)
  2. Perform complex spatial queries: attribute and location
  3. Create driven maps (map book)
    Geoprocess data with Clip, Dissolve, Merge, Intersect, Union, and other functions

4.      Metadata Development & Editing
