Los Angeles County creates 140 GIS positions and classifications

Today, April 22nd, I am very happy to report that the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved the reclassification of 140 existing positions into the GIS classification series that was approved two years ago (click here for that older announcement).  This included the creation of a new item, GIS Technician I, to fill out our complete GIS series.

Note: In August 2014, the GIS Technician 1 and 2 minimum requirements were updated to include an additional MR that would enable existing County staff with experience, but not an Associates Degree, to qualify for these positions.

To view the board letter, click here (Reclassification Board Letter).

This action will the County’s ability to hire and retain Geographic Information Systems (GIS) staff that will help the County use geography and GIS technologies to support the citizens of the County more effectively for emergency response, citizen engagement, child and family well being, and analyis and decision making.

5 years of effort have finally come to this – that the County recognizes that the work of these 140 staff is focused on geographic technologies, not on the disparate positions that they were hired on.  Thank you to the staff who have waited and labored patiently, doing a great job while waiting for this day.

What happens now?

County staff that want to transition onto these new items will be given the opportunity to meet the qualifications (since they are already doing the work, it will be straightforward).  Those that do not will be able to continue in their current position.

Once the internal transitions have occurred, we anticipate releasing external exams to fill the lists so that County departments will be able to hire talent from outside the County.

More detailed Information about the positions

Current GIS job descriptions are found at the County’s Human Resources Class Specification Search site, which will have the most up to date information in the next few weeks.  The CAO salary listing will have current salary information
