SpaceBook – A 3D Map of World Satellites

How many of us, while explaining GIS to non-GIS users, find ourselves explaining that GIS IS NOT GPS? Well, here is a great online app that will let you demonstrate both of them at once!

Introduced by AGI, SpaceBook was created by the Commercial Space Operations Center to improve the quality of remotely sensed data from space for commercial purposes. Data accuracy from arrays of satellites is improved with better knowledge of where space objects are, were, and where they will be.

Whether you are a Remote Sensing specialist, a GIS student learning about Remote Sensing, or even a casual hobbyist who likes tracking satellites with a pair of binoculars on clear nights, SpaceBook is a useful tool!

The application allows you to filter space objects by name, country, mission, orbit type, etc. You can pan, zoom, and animate satellites and their positions by time. Click on an individual ‘dot’ in space to pull up that satellite’s information.
