Roam for Windows Tablets

IntraMaps Roam is a free and open source app for offline tablet use, providing a field-friendly interface ‘skin’ on top of QGIS. On tablets we tested, panning, zooming, editing, and taking pictures were extremely smooth and fast. Our prototype tablet had enough local storage to include 4 GB for vector basemap layers plus locally hyperlinked PDF documents, and we needed another 80 GB for countywide aerial imagery.

Traditional tablet apps like ArcGIS Collector are able to work with small geographic areas offline, and happily, are constantly improving. However, if anyone desires the convenience of a 100% offline solution for data collection and general field use, Roam is worth a look.

If anyone is interested, we’re leaving a few links on this site’s Open Source GIS page to help get started, including

  • Free software downloads
  • Tutorials
  • Sample scripts for updating tablet basemap layers from the Los Angeles County GIS Data Portal
  • Utilities for synchronizing edits from multiple tablet users
