Summer internship at Southern California Edison

Edison has a GIS internship available for next summer:



This position is part of Southern California Edison’s (SCE) University and Campus Relations Internship Program. The Summer Internship program is a 10-12 week paid opportunity to gain hands-on experience with challenging work, while developing your skills, and building your network. The Summer Internship has an estimated start date of May/June 2016 and an estimated end date of August/September 2016. Summer interns may have the potential to carry on as Year-Round interns, working part-time throughout the school year. Decisions to work as a Year-Round intern will be based upon summer performance, business need, and the interest of the intern.

SCE offers these programs with the belief that learning and development are important parts of building future leaders. Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in intern mixers, executive speaker series, site tours, community volunteer events, and cross-company networking.

There are multiple internship opportunities within SCE. Interns will work in teams and analyze complex data to effectively support engineering and business operations. Interns are also expected to maintain a safety conscious work environment by following Edison safety protocols and safe work practices.

Real Properties (RP) is a part of the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) organizational unit and oversees and manages rights-of-way throughout SCE’s 50,000-square-mile service territory. RP handles transactions and support services to manage and safeguard all SCE land and land rights. RP land services include land and rights acquisition, federal permits, survey, GIS & mapping, land rights research, relocations, appraisals, and clearing encroachments. RP generates revenue for the company through Secondary Land Use, timber sales, Camp Edison, as well as supporting Carrier Solutions.

Opportunities are available in the following areas:


Geospatial Analysis Group:

The intern would provide GIS (Geographic Information Systems) support for the Geospatial Analysis group within Real Properties. Duties would include the following:

  • Produces data layers, maps, tables, or reports, using spatial analysis procedures or GIS technology.
  • Performs standard spatial analysis such as buffering, spatial overlays and distance calculations using established methods and procedures.
  • Perform topology checks and other data quality controls including but not limited to attribution checks.
  • Clean geographic data topology errors and omissions

This position is located in Pomona.


  • Must currently be pursuing an undergraduate, or graduate degree in Geography, Environmental Science, or Computer Science with an emphasis in GIS or a related field at an accredited institution with a graduation date of December 2016 or later.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.00 or higher.
  • Demonstrated experience with various geospatial software including: ArcGIS, Google Earth, and AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft applications such as Excel, Visio, Access and PowerPoint.
