The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT)’s stated mission “applies the principles of open source and open data sharing to humanitarian response and economic development”. In a nutshell, HOT coordinates the work of OpenStreetMap volunteers and aerial mapping vendors, etc. in response to disasters in various parts of the world.
Volunteers often work from the comfort of their own homes, creating data used by first time responders and for helping with disaster recovery efforts. The HOT Tasking Manager shows their responses to the recent earthquake in Ecuador. To learn more about HOT, please visit their wiki.
