Communities are one of the most complex geographic issues in the County of Los Angeles, due to historical narratives, perceptions of value, intense public interest, and shifts over time. The County has a need to establish a consistent geographic reporting base that will enable statistics and information to reported to the Board, that attempts to represent all of the interactions but is primarily focused on reporting.
The eGIS Committee has begun an initiative to establish two primary sets of geographic boundaries:
Countywide Statistical Areas (formerly called Board Approved Statistical Areas or BASA)
Purpose: to provide a common geographic boundary for reporting departmental statistics to the Board.

Communities/Places (draft name – to be finalized later)
Purpose: to provide a common naming convention for geographic areas in the County (informal, used more for labeling – not boundaries). Tend to reflect the preferences of residents.
